Check a serial number or verify a CFP

Before completing a private firearm transaction in Utah, you can use the State of Utah's free lookup tool to confirm a serial number isn't reported stolen, and to verify the validity of a Utah Concealed Firearm Permit.

Who runs this

The Utah Department of Public Safety, Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI). The form below is embedded directly from serialandcfp.ps.utah.gov. UTAM does not see, log, or transmit anything you enter — your browser communicates directly with the State.

Voluntary, by statute

Per Utah Code § 76-10-526.1, using this lookup is optional. No governmental entity may require it, and not using it is not evidence of negligence. Results are not saved by the State.

A few things to know before you use it

  • Two lookups, one at a time. The State's form lets you check either a Utah CFP or a firearm serial number per submission, not both at once.
  • Serial matches aren't unique.Different manufacturers can reuse the same serial. A "possibly reported stolen" response is a flag to investigate, not a definitive match.
  • CFP lookup is permit-number-only.The check returns VALID or NOT VALID for a given Utah permit number — it doesn't look up by name.
  • If something doesn't feel right, walk away. See our safety tips for more on spotting scams and meeting safely.
